The rise of energy-saving start-ups: Ekotrope featured in the Sunday Boston Globe
After a great interview last week when our CEO, Ziv Rozenblum, discussed the importance of bringing energy-efficient options to the mainstream, we were thrilled to see Ekotrope mentioned on Sunday in Scott Kirsner’s Boston Globe article about the growing Massachusetts start-up community focused on energy-efficiency. As Scott points out, the new breed of energy-efficient start-ups are focusing on low-capital investments and quick profitability using existing technologies. This is in contrast to a common start-up profile that we've seen in recent years that focuses on capital intensive new technologies.
Here at Ekotrope, we created a software product suite targeted for the mainstream residential and commercial building industries, helping them to make smarter design decisions when planning for retrofits and new construction projects. The Ekotrope product allows users to make key and fundamental material and design decisions by comparing thousands of design options based on cost and value. Customers are using Ekotrope to find ways to reduce CAPEX and OPEX of buildings, identify environmental investment opportunities as well as to differentiate their value offering (to owners) and improve the efficiency of their decision making processes.
As we discussed with Scott last week, Ekotrope can be optimized for any user, regardless of their building goals. One recent Ekotrope user had very aggressive energy goals, and through our software, they found that by trading off thicker walls with more insulation and a better furnace, they could save $25,000 in construction costs. Similarly, for another client with strict budget requirements, Ekotrope calculated a five percent cost saving by simply reducing the window size (which can include removing one window in the building plan) by five percent. One of the most interesting points we took away from the Boston Globe article was the notion that while many companies are looking at energy-efficiency very differently, each also presents a very smart business plan: help people save money while easily and intelligently incorporating green solutions.
