What is the HERS Index?
The HERS Index is the industry standard for measuring a home’s energy efficiency. It’s also the nationally recognized system for inspecting and calculating a home’s energy performance. To get a HERS Index for a home, a builder must work with a certified Home Energy Rater (HERS Rater) who will assess and complete an energy rating on the home.
Nearly 4 million homes have been rated using the HERS Index to date because HERS rated homes are more energy efficient, have lower utility costs and have higher appraised values. Beyond that, the HERS Index allows builders access to rebates and incentives, including local utility rebates and the 45L Tax Credit. These rebates can add up to thousands of dollars per home. In many cases, a HERS Rating also provides a consistent and convenient way to meet local energy code.
