Ekotrope Makes Headlines in MIT News

The Ekotrope team is thrilled to share that we were featured on the front page of the MIT News this past month. CEO  Ziv Rozenblum and Lead Engineer Nick Sisler were interviewed by Zach Winn to talk about the history behind Ekotrope as well as our vision for the future.

Ekotrope’s roots start with MIT as the RATER application software was inspired by system optimization work done for NASA by Ed Crawley, Ford Professor of Engineering at MIT. Ed co-founded Ekotrope with Ziv Rozenblum, Nick Sisler, Cy Kilbourn, Ben DeLillo, and Kenneth Lazarus after an experience he had where he realized that it was an extremely difficult and time-consuming process to accurately project the impact of different materials and appliances on the overall energy efficiency of a home.

A lightbulb went off and now, 10 years later, Ekotrope continues to innovate this complex process to better facilitate cooperation across the home performance industry ecosystem.

Today about 75% of ratings in the country are done through Ekotrope RATER, which recently reached the major milestone of 500,000 confirmed ratings. Over the years, we have formed great partnerships with raters, providers, utilities, materials suppliers, and mortgage lenders and together we have found new ways to innovate the industry and make energy efficiency easier and more accessible to all.

Through tools like Scenario Modeling, Field-Data-Connection, and Automated Design Assistance as well as our all-inclusive database of over 300,000 homes/year, we aim to help our partners better understand what kind of incentives work, what trends to prepare for, and how to expand their reach to more efficiently achieve energy goals.

This interview was a great opportunity to take a walk down memory lane and remember where Ekotrope came from and how much progress our industry has made since 2011. We are excited to continue to improve our suite of tools and find ways in which we can innovate further to achieve sustainability goals. On the topic of how Ekotrope would like to grow into the future, CEO Ziv Rozenblum has said, “We aim to provide all the information necessary for making the most energy efficient decisions for every home, available and actionable in a timely manner.”
